How To Dry Citrus Fruit
Start of by cutting up the fruit in thin slices – we use pampered chef knives the children can cut through quite strong skinned fruit and they won’t get injured – we used them in the autumn cutting through windfall apples to practice skills. Once the fruit is sliced place onto baking trays which have been lined with a sheet of baking paper/grease proof paper. To add to the Christmas time add in some cloves which believe me will make your house smell amazing as they dry in the oven. With all complete put into the oven at 75C and after 1 hour turn over the slices, then another hour. Depending on your oven they make take longer and also based on the size of the slices that you cut. Once dried place in a bowl and get ready to create some amazing natural decorations in the home.
Materials For Cinnamon bundles
- 6-8 cinnamon sticks
- 1 recycled elastic band
- length of thin wire, approximately 15cm long
- 2 nutmegs with a hole drilled through the centre of each (use a clamp and fine-bore drill)
- length of recycled natural raffia, about 50cm long
- eco – friendly adhesive glue
- 1 star anise
- 1 dried orange slice
Secure the cinnamon sticks in a bundle with the elastic band. Thread the wire under the band and secure it tightly in a loop. Thread a nutmeg on to one end of the raffia, and tie a knot in one end to secure the nutmeg. Repeat at the other end. Wrap the raffia around the cinnamon bundle a couple of times so that the elastic band is completely hidden. Secure in a knot. Glue the star anise on to the front of the orange slice, then glue the orange on to the raffia so that it covers the knot.
